Supporters of Sunderland AFC and Major League Soccer’s DC United in the United States have a little more in common, thanks to Centerplate’s teams at the Stadium of Light and RFK Stadium (in Washington, D.C.).
Both teams enjoy league-leading catering and hospitality by Centerplate, and in 2014 formalized a partnership agreement to mutually promote the clubs in each market.
On the first day that each had a home match, Centerplate treated fans to a stadium favourite from across the pond, offering up D.C.-inspired “Old Bay Fries” with a Cheddar-ale dipping sauce, and torn steak sandwiches with cheese to Sunderland supporters.
Sunderland AFC’s charity “Foundation of Light” kicked things off on the eve of the match, with a kids’ competition to make the best steak and fries toppings, using different vegetables and ingredients from Centerplate, with members of SAFC Ladies’ WLS 1 team picking the winner. The Foundation of Light, which works with over 42,000 young people and families each year across the North East, is the biggest football community group in the UK.
On matchday, kiosks with the new offerings sold out—and [four] lucky supporters found a “golden ticket” for a basket prizes, chock full of Sunderland AFC and D.C. United memorabilia hidden in their orders.
